    History

Big Bear Lake Camplands had its’ beginning as a dream of Paul E. Garbart. In 1969, Paul bought his first recreational vehicle and traveled across our great country and headed for the far north to Alaska. Along the way he became intrigued with a new industry- recreational vehicle campgrounds. Upon returning to Preston County he began to buy land on the Briery Mountain Plateau . He began to develop a campground so others could enjoy the mountain living experience by actually owning a deeded camping lot. He called it Alyeska, the great lands, so the theme was born and endures to this day with many of the territories and road names with their Alaskan heritage.

In the early 1970’s the 60’ X 80’ sized RV lot sales began and reached approximately 600 owners. By the end of the 70’s over 2,000 lots were sold. Today Big Bear Lake Campland welcomes 2,800 owners to enjoy the fresh mountain air and play at its many recreational amenities.

At the passing of Paul, the business passed to his daughter Nancy, in 1984. Her tenure as owner of Alyeska, Inc. continues today, as the third generation of family ownership continues. Everyday we work hard to honor the memory of the beloved Mr. Garbart, and push towards the future. The past few years have brought about a variety of updates in the campground including the renovation of the miniature golf course, expansion of the store, and the construction of our waterpark, Bearfoot Springs.
