DATE: April 11-14,2019
LOCATION: Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Monterey, California
The mission of the Sea Otter Classic is to make people’s lives better through participation in sport and recreation, and through celebration of an active outdoor lifestyle.
EVENT OVERVIEW: The 2018 Sea Otter Classic, “A Celebration of Cycling,” will be held April 19-22, 2018 at Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Monterey, California, USA. This four-day, action-packed cycling festival features a full schedule of amateur and professional events, as well as other activities for family members of all ages. The Sea Otter Classic also plays host to the world’s largest consumer bike exposition.
ACTIVITIES AND ATTRACTIONS: Racers make the annual pilgrimage to Sea Otter to participate in cycling’s best competitive and non-competitive events. Mountain bike races include an epic cross-country, dual slalom, downhill, and more. Road cyclists enjoy road racing and circuit racing on the world-famous Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway. And for those who want to bike in less-competitive fashion, Sea Otter offers two Gran Fondo routes, as well as a Mountain Bike Tour and a Gravel Grinder Tour on the surrounding fire roads and trails of the Fort Ord National Monument.
The Sea Otter Village, the hub of the event, pulses with free bike demos, stunt shows, and live entertainment, plus special activities for kids 12 and under. Other Village hotspots are an international food court, a beer and BBQ garden, and the Sea Otter exposition area. The Expo features hundreds of vendors who display new products, give out free samples, and offer terrific bargains. In the Sea Otter Village, hundreds of professional road and mountain bike athletes are present to share their racing techniques with fans and to sign autographs.
FOR CHILDREN: Sea Otter Egg Hunt, Kids’ Carnival, Kids’ Bicycle Races, and Kids’ Zone

Bike valet service/bike corral is available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. At those times, you may drop off your bike and walk away with a claim check, knowing your bike is under the watchful eyes of the bike valet attendants. The bike valet parking is located in the Paddock Parking area right next to the Expo entrance. Look for “Expo Entrance” and “Bike Valet” on the Festival Map
Free shuttle service is available for all Sea Otter attendees. Shuttle stops are located just below Wolf Hill Parking and at the festival entrance to Turn 5. Shuttles are ADA accessible and run from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., Thursday – Sunday.
Throughout Monterey County, you may load your bike onto the rack of any large or small Monterey-Salinas Transit System (MST) bus with this exception: the only trolleys that can be counted on to have bike racks are those serving the California State University at Monterey Bay (CSUMB) campus.
The MST buses are happy to carry your bike—and there is no additional charge. Helpful pointers for cyclists who want to use the MST buses are provided in the “Bike-and-Ride” section of Tips for Bicycling Monterey County at BicyclingMonterey.com. On the MST site there are bike-loading instructions at the end of the Transit Tips section; see “How to Ride”–“Rider’s Guide”–“Transit Tips.”
For “day of” updates: Any service updates for MST buses are provided on Twitter. If you have a Twitter account, you may follow them @mst_bus. If you do not have a Twitter account, you can still check for the updates. Simply go to Twitter.com/MST_bus to view their Twitter stream, where any current updates will remain.
Limited MST Bus Service to Laguna Seca–Weekdays Only
On weekdays only, there is limited service to Laguna Seca via MST. On arrival, since the bus stop is on Highway 68, it is necessary to bike or walk (uphill) the distance remaining, to reach Sea Otter activities.
Special parking for Subaru owners! Drive to Sea Otter in your Subaru and get priority parking in the paddock area on a first-come, first-served basis. This provides you with easy access to the Expo area as a special Thank You for Subaru owners at Sea Otter.
A busload of friends? Buses are welcome at Sea Otter. They will be directed to the larger paddock parking area, where space will be made available for them.
All general parking is on Wolf Hill, which is clearly marked on the Festival Map. No camping is allowed at Wolf Hill General Parking.
Athletes’ tip: In a rush to race, or get started on your Gran Fondo ride? Park on Wolf Hill. From there, the parking attendants can quickly direct you to Athlete Registration, which is in the Red Bull Energy Center. Beyond that, plan ahead. Check out the Festival map before entering Laguna Seca, and allow thirty minutes to get off the highway, park your vehicle, and bike/walk to Athlete Registration.
Think riding with someone who’s headed to one of the restricted parking areas, instead of general parking at Wolf Hill, will get you to Athlete Registration faster? Nope. Wolf Hill is closer to Athlete Registration than, for example, Expo parking.
That’s why so many signs from Wolf Hill Parking point to places people need to go, many of which are located in the Red Bull Energy Center AKA Athlete Registration building. To get there, follow the signs along the clearly marked pedestrian pathway that heads down the hill.
ADA accessible parking is available on Wolf Hill, next to athlete registration, in the Paddock Parking lot, and at the festival entrance to Turn 5. Let the parking attendants know that you will need ADA accessible parking and they can assist you with finding a parking spot. ADA placard must be displayed to use this parking.
FOR MEDIA: Interviews with event organizers, local athletes, and world-class professionals can be set up through the Sea Otter press office.

EVENT BACKGROUND: “You guys should put on a mountain bike race.” That simple statement from a Monterey bike shop owner in 1990 was the genesis for the Laguna Seca Challenge, later renamed the Sea Otter Classic.
Co-founders Frank Yohannan and Lou Rudolph hosted the inaugural Laguna Seca Challenge on April 6 and 7, 1991. The event had a total of 350 athletes and 150 spectators. In 1993, the Laguna Seca Challenge was renamed the Sea Otter Classic. By 2016, the Sea Otter Classic had become a four-day celebration of cycling welcoming more than 9,600 athletes and 71,000 fans.
The event is now regarded as the bicycle world’s premier festival and one of the world’s largest. The little mountain bike race has grown up.
RESPONSIBLE ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: From the start, event organizers have been committed to good stewardship of the land that is home to the Sea Otter Classic. With every year, Sea Otter achieves more success in reducing the event’s ecological impact on our home—the Laguna Seca Recreation Area and the adjacent Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property, and other parts of our community.
Going for the Green: It can be easy to forget that such environmentally-conscious practices are not followed everywhere. For that reason, in our third decade we have partnered with Sierra Nevada to share Sea Otter’s “Responsible Environmental Stewardship” model more widely. We will use our leadership position to raise awareness of how simple it is for people everywhere to engage in basic environmental sustainability actions like recycling, carpooling and alternative transportation (including cycling), and other actions to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to global warming. Today’s environmental stakes are high, and Sea Otter is “going for the green” in a bigger, bolder way.
BOILERPLATE: About Sea Otter Classic, Inc. Regarded as the world’s largest cycling festival, this four-day “Celebration of Cycling” hosts nearly 10,000 professional and amateur athletes and 65,000 fans. The 28th Annual Subaru Sea Otter Classic takes place April 19-22, 2018 at the Laguna Seca Recreation Area, Monterey, California. For more information, visit www.seaotterclassic.com or call (800) 218-8411.

Hollister Hills SVRA is excited to return with our wildlife tabletop displays and R/C Jeeps. The always-popular R/C Jeeps allow individuals to try their luck at Rock Crawling, a popular Off-Highway activity. Using a 1/10 scale model of a Jeep Rubicon participants will maneuver over various obstacles as they follow a set course. The goal here is to drive slow allowing you to have more control over the vehicle as you traverse each obstacle.
The tabletop displays allow all who are interested to learn about various animals present at HHSVRA through pictures and tactile props. The popular “Birds of Prey” tabletop identifies what these birds are, common types found at HHSVRA, and what makes them different from other birds. The “Wildlife” tabletop highlights common mammals found at HHSVRA and allows those who are interested to touch various fur pelts and look at animal tracks and skulls.
Located in the Specialized Kids’ Play Area. Open during Expo hours.
